The votes were counted and the results are in….

A bad night for the Conservatives who lost 4 (Castle, Stanway, St Johns & Shrub End), the Greens gained 1 (Castle) Labour Gained 2 (New Town & Highwoods) and Liberal Democrats Lost 1 (New Town) and Gained 2 (Shrub End & Stanway)

This means that the Liberal Democrats are the largest party in a proposed coalition council. However, as per Mark Goacher’s interview on www.actualradio.co.uk this is dependent on Green Policies being adopted.

So in summary it is a case of who will compromise for a seat at the table. Power can be a strange thing.

What’s next?

First things first who will be leader? The first name in the hat should be the wildly popular Mark Cory but have a feeling that it may not be for him. Or could it be the former leader Paul Smith who has the experience but not a great legacy.

The other name is Martin Goss himself in a write the theme tune and sing the theme kind of way.

However, the most credible candidate other than Mark Cory is David King, who is a sensible and pragmatic Councillor who is effective and generally liked by all.

Aftermath

It was a bad tempered campaign especially in Stanway and St John’s which is going to craw in the jowls of the local Conservatives and especially the presence of the

The Tories themselves did not have a great night due to the National Picture and expect Boris to be under extreme pressure in the morning.

Labour did extremely well but probably regret not hitting Shrub End harder and sacrificed Wivenhoe.

The Green Party could be the Kingmakers but would not rule out if negotiations get a bit tense that the Independents could flirt with crossing back over. There was an agreement in place wasn’t there as a progressive alliance even though they do not need them mathematically? Nothing surprises me anymore. It is who blinks first.

More to come in the next few days.

Dundas done and all hail to the next King?
